Gene therapy and regenerative tissue engineering in congenital heart disease

Francesco Nappi, Sanjeet Singh Avatar Singh

Abstract

Gene therapy in genetic heart disease is a very attractive topic within the scientific community especially as some congenital heart diseases have been treated in with genome manipulation (1). Two years after its complete affirmation, the precise editing of the genome with CRISPR-Cas9 technology (2) has allowed researchers and clinicians to enter a new era of higher-level genetic engineering and more precise gene therapy; however, the implementation of such concepts remain lagging behind.
